Emergency Preparedness: Are You Prepared?

Speaker: Nancy J Beckley, MS, MBA, CHC    Learn More^

Description:

Audience:

This webinar is designed for the existing Rehab Agency that is preparing to update existing disaster policies and procedures for compliance with the CMS Emergency Preparedness Rule.  This webinar will be helpful for those in process with an application to be certified as a Rehab Agency. This webinar is also suitable for those in a Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Facility (CORF).

Level of Presentation:

This webinar is designed at the intermediate level and assumes basic knowledge of overall Rehab Agency Conditions of Participation (CoP) and basic requirements of Survey and Certification disaster requirements under the previous CoP.  Basic Rehab Agency information on CoP will not be covered.  (Note:  Entry level webinars on becoming a Rehab Agency or CORF are available at NancyBeckley.com).

Goals:

  1. Identify and interpret the CMS Emergency Preparedness (EP) Conditions of Participation specific to the Rehab Agency.
  2. Understand resources essential to the development of an All-Hazards Vulnerability Risk Assessment including where to find resources and how to use them.
  3. How to connect with, and document participation with local, regional and state disaster authorities and coalitions.
  4. How to use your Risk Assessment to develop the four CoP requirements:
    1. Emergency Plan
    2. Policies and Procedures
    3. Communication Plan
    4. Training and Testing Plan.

Webinar Description:

Disaster preparedness implies that you are ready and “prepared” to face a wide range of scenarios from hurricanes, wild fires, cyber threats, and active shooter incidents amongst others.  For the Rehab Agency accustomed to running an annual fire drill as a “check the box exercise”, the level of preparation for meeting Emergency Preparedness under the new CoP cannot be overstated.

The Emergency Preparedness CoP is required and effective for surveys after November 15, 2017.  Rehab Agencies may find that they are not prepared for a survey, or worse yet, for a disaster. The current survey cycle of 5 - 6 years, (3 years for accreditation) dictates that Rehab Agencies must anticipate scrutiny of their preparedness.  Given the complexity, content and breath of the CoP correction of a Condition level deficiency would not be achievable in the 10 day timeframe associated with a Plan of Correction.

Following this webinar, a Rehab Agency will have the information necessary to:

  • Conduct an effective assessment of Rehab Agency specific risk areas
  • Understand elements to be considered in establishing a plan for emergencies
  • Develop new, or expand existing, policies and procedures to encompass emergency preparedness
  • Understand the comprehensive approach required for communication with staff, patients, community, and first responders
  • Design and conduct the comprehensive training consistent with the CoP requirements
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of Rehab Agency emergency preparedness testing approach, content, and documentation

We are in the process of applying for CEUs for PT, PTA, OT, COTA, and CHC
